With its wealth of beautiful locations, historical sites, and attractions for all ages and interests, Cumbria is the perfect destination for a weekend trip. Whether you’re planning a weekend in your home away from home at Silloth holiday park, or you’re scoping out the local area so you can invest in a static caravan, there are plenty of things to see and do in the Lake District.
From free activities to keep the kids or grandchildren happy to romantic getaways for couples, our guide is here to help you plan your weekend break in the Lake District.
What are the best things to do in the Lake District?
At Seacote Park, we’re lucky enough to be located on the stunning Cumbrian coast, close to all manner of attractions. Whether you’re a keen hiker, enjoy a stroll along the beach, or need an activity for a rainy day, there’s plenty to keep you occupied.
Before we look at how to plan your weekend in the Lake District, here are a few must-visit locations near our holiday lodges in Cumbria.
Whinlatter Forest
Perfect for all ages, Whinlatter Forest is a short drive away. Sprawling across 100 hectares, this beautiful woodland includes a Go Ape zipline facility, play areas, and a cafe. It’s one of our favourite days out in Cumbria for families.
Mayport Aquarium
When you’re in need of an indoor activity, head over to the Lake District Coast Aquarium in Maryport — just half an hour from Seacote. Open seven days a week, it’s an excellent option for a rainy weekend break in the Lake District — but equally fun when the weather is fine, too.
Marvel at over 2000 colourful fish and sea creatures, grab a coffee in the cafe, and if the sun is shining, make the most of it with a round of golf!
Hadrian’s Wall
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to finding a spot to visit along Hadrian’s Wall. From picnic areas and cycling routes to history-filled forts, there’s something for everyone. And with 73 miles to explore, there will be something new to see every time you spend a weekend in your Seacote caravan.
Carlisle Castle
Carlisle Castle is another excellent option if you’re looking for things to do in Cumbria that are suitable for families. Not only is it an impressive structure dating back to 1092, but it also includes beautiful grounds, the Museum of Military Life, and a cafe and gift shop.
We also recommend keeping an eye out for events at Carlisle Castle — there are talks, exhibitions, and concerts throughout the year.
Your ultimate itinerary for a weekend in Cumbria
Once you’ve decided when you’re going to spend a weekend in Cumbria, you can have fun planning your itinerary. The best activities and attractions for you will depend on the time of year you visit and who you’ll be spending your weekend in the Lake District with.
Our itinerary template includes a range of things to do in Cumbria, some suited to families, others to couples or groups of friends. You can mix and match to create the perfect getaway for you.
Friday night
Arrive at Seacote and enjoy a cosy evening in your home away from home. You can cook up a delicious meal or head out to nearby Barracks Bridge or Silloth for dinner. There are plenty of restaurants, pubs, and bars to choose from.
If it’s light when you arrive, why not have a stroll along the coastal path and view East Cote Lighthouse?
Saturday morning
Whether you’re an early riser or prefer a lie-in, there’s plenty to pack in on Saturday morning when you spend a weekend in Cumbria. Fuel up with a good breakfast, then make your way to your favourite point along Hadrian’s Wall — try Birdoswald Roman Fort, which is just over an hour’s drive from Seacote.
You could take a picnic and a flask of tea or coffee to enjoy as you look out across the spectacular scenery.
Saturday afternoon
On your way back west, explore Carlisle Castle or witness majestic hawks, owls, and more at the Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre.
If you fancy a rest before heading out for the evening, unwind in your static caravan with a book or sit and watch the world go by on a nearby beach — these are just a couple of relaxing, free things to do in Cumbria.
Saturday evening
The Cottage in the Wood is the perfect dinner destination for couples spending a weekend in the Lake District. Located within Whinlatter Forest, this fine-dining restaurant offers an intimate and romantic atmosphere, surrounded by the serene beauty of nature.
Alternatively, try the Manor House Bar and Restaurant in Maryport or The Oak at Curthwaite in Wigton for a more family-friendly gastropub menu.
Sunday morning
For the final day of your weekend in the Lake District, we recommend making the most of your Sunday with an early start.
If you’re looking for a family activity, pop over to Maryport to explore the aquarium, followed by a visit to the Moorforge Viking Settlement for some historical entertainment.
For literary fans, Wordsworth House and Garden is a charming place to visit. Located in Cockermouth, this National Trust property was William Wordsworth’s childhood home in the mid to late 1700s. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the early life of one of England’s greatest poets and includes a tranquil walled garden filled with flowers, vegetables, and herbs.
Sunday afternoon
After a busy morning exploring Cumbria’s rich history and attractions, spend a relaxed Sunday afternoon soaking in the region’s natural beauty. Have a wander along the Silloth Promenade, which boasts expansive views of the Solway Firth and across to Scotland.
Alternatively, visit the Solway Coast Discovery Centre, where you can learn about the local area’s heritage, wildlife, and its designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This AONB is around 30 minutes north of Seacote Caravan Park.
