Whinlatter Forest has everything you need for a day of fresh air and impressive scenery. With a car park that’s open until 8.30 pm and a range of varied paths, you can stroll or cycle to your heart’s content. But what else can you find at Whinlatter?

Visitors Centre

Start your day perusing the Whinlatter Forest Visitor’s Centre, where you can pick up trail maps and ask the friendly staff any questions. Whinlatter Forest offers various walking and mountain bike trails, each with a colour-coded difficulty rating.

So, no matter what kind of adventure you’re after, you can find a route to fit. There’s even a family and buggy-friendly Gruffalo trail featuring sculptures inspired by the popular children’s book.

Did you know you can hire bikes, too? Plus, if you need mobility assistance, you can hire a Tramper all-terrain mobility scooter to help you enjoy the forest safely and comfortably.

Wildlife Hide

With so many terrains and habitats, Whinlatter attracts a multitude of birds and animals, from red squirrels and roe deer to buzzards and siskins.

If you’re lucky, you might even spot a majestic osprey.

The forest’s wildlife hide provides a fantastic space to look out across the spectacular landscape and see what critters might come into view.

Food & Drink

What better way to take a break from exploring than tucking into a sandwich and sipping a hot coffee?

Cafe Ambio offers a welcoming space where you can do just that while immersing yourself in the peaceful surroundings of Whinlatter Forest.

Alternatively, you can dine alfresco at the forest’s picnic area.

Play Area

Looking to keep the kids or grandchildren occupied?

Whinlatter Forest is home to an exciting play area.

The Wild Play Trail lets children climb, jump, balance, and explore.

Offering 600 metres of activities, it’s a great way for little ones to let off steam and run around.

Go Ape

And for those who want more of an adrenaline rush, Whinlatter Forest has its very own Go Ape facility.

See the forest from a whole new perspective high in the treetops, whizz along ziplines, or stay closer to the ground with segway adventures.

Toilets

You can find essential amenities, including accessible toilets and baby changing facilities, at the Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre.

How to get to Whinlatter Forest

Whinlatter Forest is very easy to get to from Seacote Caravan Park. You can follow either the B503 or the A595, heading towards Whinlatter Pass. The journey should take approximately 50 to 55 minutes, depending on traffic.

Alternatively, if you’re visiting the town of Keswick first, you can take the A66 west towards Cockermouth, turn west onto the B5292 at Braithwaite village, and then head towards the Whinlatter Visitor Centre signposts for around three miles.

In the summer, you can also hop on the number 77 or 77A bus from Keswick to Whinlatter Forest.

The Whinlatter car park works on a pay-on-exit basis. The first hour costs £2.60, with an extra 50p per additional 15 minutes. The maximum you’ll pay for all-day parking is £10.
