Tickets & Parking

Before you start exploring the castle, it’s helpful to know where you can buy Carlisle Castle tickets and how the car park works.

  • Tickets: You can get your tickets at the door, but if you book online ahead of time, you can save up to 15%.
  • Parking: Carlisle Castle has a dedicated car park for disabled visitors only. If you’re not a Blue Badge holder, you can park in the city centre — there are several car parks to choose from, and all are a short walk from the castle.

The Castle

From Richard III’s former bedroom to the tower that held Mary, Queen of Scots captive, you can explore the history-filled rooms of Carlisle Castle.

See carved graffiti from the 15th century in the castle keep and brave Carlisle Castle dungeon, where you can learn about the ‘licking stones’.

Museum of Military Life

If you have an interest in military history, Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life is a worthwhile visit. Located within the grounds of Carlisle Castle, the museum hosts an array of collections that tell the story of Cumbria County’s Infantry Regiment.

With artefacts dating back to the early 1700s, it offers insight into army life over the past three centuries. There are also regular events and exhibitions.

There are also grab rails throughout the castle, but please be aware that there are areas with staircases and uneven ground.

How to get to Carlisle Castle

If you’re driving to Carlisle Castle from Silloth caravan park, the journey should take around 40 minutes to get to the city centre. From there, the castle is very central. Head past Carlisle Cathedral on Castle Street, then take the underpass at the main road.

Blue Badge holders can park onsite, in which case the journey from Seacote is around 45 minutes.

The castle is a 15-minute walk from the train station for those travelling by rail.

If you buy your tickets in advance online, they cost £14.50 for adults aged 18-64 and £12.70 for concessions (including students and visitors aged 65+). Tickets on the door cost slightly more.

If you’re a Seacote holidayer and you like to visit Carlisle Castle throughout the year, why not consider becoming an English Heritage member? You’ll be able to head over to the castle for free whenever you like.

Assistance dogs are welcome across the Carlisle Castle sites. Non-assistance dogs are also welcome (on leads only). However, they are not allowed in the military museum or exhibition space.

The original Carlisle Castle structure dates back to 1092 when it was built by William II (William Rufus), the son of William the Conqueror.

The original construction was a motte-and-bailey castle, but over the centuries, the keep and additional buildings were added.
